Whitby, Ontario is located on the
northeastern side of the Greater
Toronto Area and is connected to the centre of Canada's
largest city via the MacDonald Cartier Freeway. The shores of Lake Ontario dominate
the south side of the city and form an ideal natural harbour, where boats, waterfowl,
green space and people all intermingle when it's warm outside. The hustle and
bustle of the city is largely left behind in Whitby, where parks abound, from
Iroquois
Park, a large man-made recreation complex, to Lynde
Shores Conservation Area, a 227-hectare (561-acre) wilderness oasis that has
somehow managed to elude industrialization. The history of Whitby dates back to
the early 1800s when the first settlers set up camp here, and for those interested
in getting to know more about Whitby's past and present, the Whitby
Museum offers artifacts and activities for kids and kids at heart. Fancy a
day at the beach? Iroquois
Beach is the place, and nearby Lion's
Promenade offers the perfect spot for a morning jog or evening stroll.
